dealing with democracy and activism in contemporary art; artist identity - where localness meets a global context; and finally, dealing with different forms of art collectives and the engagement of the community in contemporary art projects.

TO HAVE / TO OWN sets the frame for Platform's anniversary activities, as a way of summing up since its start in 2000. The symposium coincides with the launch of the book "Don't look back", partly documenting past Platform activities and partly presenting new projects. A selection of recent projects by artists-in-residence at Platform will also be presented. The word is a social one, based on a question or call. If we are not in dialogue, if there is no discussion or dialogue between us, if we are not demanding and demanded of, the concept of responsibility falls away.
We are in a time of increasing instability -- social, political, economic, environmental -- these instabilities do not stop neatly at the boundaries between individuals, families, cities or countries. They point to our interconnectedness, our interdependence. In the face of these instabilities, some of which may bring catastrophic changes, what, if anything, is being asked of us; what are we asking of others? Can we ask/demand something of others we wouldn’t be prepared to ask of ourselves? What are the ramifications of doing this?
The word responsibility often carries the implication of guilt, culpability or an onerous chore one would like to avoid. Can we recast this word, that links us to each other, in a more positive, social, desiring and pleasurable way?
Artists typically place themselves in the position of outsider, commentator or instigator. Can artists enter into this dialogue at the same level as others, as opposed to the safer/more strategic positions of outsider, commentator or educator?
The above questions, calling for a response, are linguistically driven, the projects need not be. This open call can be seen as an invitation, a possibility or a challenge.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS 31st AUGUST 2011

THE PROGRAM
Annually 5-6 artists are invited, normally about 2 months, to realize a project. The residency offers accommodation, a studio, covered travel expenses, a monthly grant as well as a production budget.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
An application consisting of a motivation letter/project proposal, documentation of 5 projects and a cv, all included in one document, to be sent electronically to info@platform.fi during the month of August, but no later than 31.8.2011.
For closer details on the application procedure and the program, please consult our web-page:
http://www.platform.fi/residency

ATTEMPTS TO GET INSIDE THE WORLD - Natasha Rosling in London
26th AUGUST – 11th SEPTEMBER 2011 AT LEWISHAM ARTHOUSE

ZOE ANSPACH, SOL ARCHER, ANTOINE BERTIN, JACOB BLANDY, CHRISTOPH BOTH-ASMUS, SARAH BOWDEN, ANNA BUNTING-BRANCH, CELINE CONDORELLI, PAULINE CURNIER-JARDIN, ISOBEL DUNHILL, MAGDA FABIANCZYK, CORINNE FELGATE, AMANDA FRANCIS, LINDA FRANKE, LUDOVICA GIOSCIA, JAMIE GEORGE, PER HUTTNER, MICHAEL LEE, ROBERT LISNEY, JOANNE MASDING, SACHI MIYACHI, NATASHA ROSLING, KRISTIN SHERMAN, CHOOC LY TAN, FATOS USTEK, WOUTER VENEMA, JOHN WALTER, VICTORIA WATSON, MICHAEL WHITBY, RICHARD WHITBY, LAURA WHITE, ELEANOR WRIGHT

To round up the summer and start the new season Lewisham Arthouse presents, Attempts to Get Inside the World, an exciting series of events initiated with the support of Vision Forum and the Arthouse’s Graduate scheme. Over the course of these two weeks a range of talks, screenings and performances will take place set within a laboratory-style exhibition. The intention is to reveal the raw edges to many of the processes that feed an art practice, shifting eyes away from the product and into the thick the background. Particular attention will be given to research transgressing the boundaries of the studio – either through grappling with unknown subjects and disciplines, or through direct attempts to thrust oneself into the midst of an often extreme set of physical and psychological circumstances.

The exhibition space will house two main conference events, Retreat: in the City – 27th and 28th August, organised by Michael Whitby, and Navigating Extremes - 3rd and 4th September by Natasha Rosling. Artists, curators, architects, choreographers, and theatre practitioners from across Europe and London will come together to present talks, set-up discussions, screenings and performances under the umbrella of Attempts to Get Inside the World. A series of furnitures and rolling projections will occupy the gallery space - displaying works, artefacts, test pieces, experiments and research material selected by each participant in reference to the practices discussed.

PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION AND PROGRAMME

Lewisham Arthouse, 140 Lewisham Way, London SE14 6PD
Preview: South London Art Map Last Fridays 26th August 6-9pm
Exhibition Open: Wednesday to Sunday, 12-6pm 27th August – 11th September.
Transport: Rail/Underground - New Cross/New Cross Gate; Buses - 21, 36, 136, 321

Dallas Dolls Bestseller

more info here:

CINEMIXA IN JAPAN

SILENT FRENCH BLACK AND WHITE AND HAND COLOURED FILMS, MADE IN THE EARLIEST DAYS OF FILM MAKING BY VISIONARY FILM MAKERS, ARE THEN SCREENED AND ACCOMPANIED BY LIVE IMPROVISED ELECTRONIC AND NOISE AND WIND AND KEYBOARD SYNTHESIZER PERFORMED MUSIC. Simple confusion is that which we experience when for instance, we don’t understand directions we are given, or when we can’t find the solution to a puzzle. Self-sustaining confusion, on the other hand occurs ‘when the mind is trying to escape awareness of conflict…in which one’s deep intention is really to avoid perceiving the fact, rather than to sort it out and make it clear’ Bohm points out that this process creates an order of its own: a reflexive state of dullness in which the natural agility of the mind is replaced is replaced with a torpor on the one hand, mechanical and meaningless fantasies on the other. Unfortunately says Bohm, this has come to be considered a normal state of mind, and is therefore endemic to our culture.”

-Lee Nichols, Preface to the Routledge Classics Edition of David Bohm’s “On Creativity”, Routledge 1997.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='William S. Why is travelling so closely connected to the artistic process, career, inspiration and education? The art world has spun the globe ever since the ”Grand Tours” in Europe and travels are still a great part of the practice within the field of contemporary art.
Invited artists, curators, philosophers, designers to contribute with their individual travel stories to the publication; the idea of travels, strategies, plans and thoughts. The stories and reflections are diverse and we have embraced these variations instead of presenting one truth about travelling. How travelling is having an effect on life and reality, regarding both the daily and the once in a lifetime travelling experiences. Each chapter takes you on a different journey, exploring the most puzzling aspects of travelling in a series of beautifully paced stories, both imaginary and realistic.
Exile is a powerful fantasy that also hosts its opposite, because there is no exile without the idea of creating a home. Exile always plays ping-pong with the concept of belonging
Per Hüttner

The global art world, although functioning internationally, has a way of flattening out all edges of difference through its rigid system of representation – of people, ideas, and products. It is a dangerous place in that it emphasizes on sameness, it drastically wants it, needs it, produces it in order to “draw numbers”,be sellable and attractive for a lot and in one glance. We knew enough about that; we played that card daily in our jobs.
Lillan Fellman
A friend of mine told me about a Russian sect obsessed with moving. They believe that the only way to escape from the devil is to keep moving, and they even sleep on public transport to practice their belief. Not that I believe what they believe in, but I understand the fear of being captured by some static power that haunts you and controls your life, which would give you limitations and fixed ideas.
Mako Ishizuka

The Particularities of Place.
On the process of Non-Places: Ufa – Gothenburg – Belgrade, 2005 – 2009

One the most fundamental parameters of human life are places we inhabit and visit throughout our lives, although rarely formed by us as individuals. How can one as an artist work with place as both concept and reality? And if there are any non-places how can we conceive these?
Non-Places is stretched out in time and space. Gathering a group of curators and artists the project has two aims. Firstly, it deals with the notion of place vis-à-vis non-place, that is how these notions have been conceptualized in the arts, the discourse of cultural theory and used in the technocratic formation of western social apparatus. We understand the notion in dynamic terms opening up the discussion, reflection and artistic production for the everyday. And, secondly, in a process-based way the project tries to find alternative working models for artistic production.
Non-Places has been running for six years. During these years the project group has been travelling together, visited each other´s home towns and working together. Within the group one thread of interest has distinguished itself during the working process; that is a deeper reflection on how the intimacy of the particular is negotiated within the larger framework of the general. If you dare to be specific as an artist you can manage to say something important about contemporary life.
The publication presents and discusses the project thematically under the three headlines - To Put into Words what Between the Lines, Because it´s never only about “Non-Places” and City Maps – Mental Maps. The headlines are being used to avoid a linear narration in favour of keeping the spirit of the project prevalent throughout the publication that is emphasizing reflexivity and dialogue.
With exhibitions and discussions, both public and closed, being held in Museum of Contemporary Art in Ufa, Russia 2005, Röda Sten in Gothenburg, Sweden 2006, and part of Belef Belgrade Summer Festival, Serbia 2007. This publication is a compilation of images, artist’s presentation, and a discussion on our collaborative work.

The publications have been generously supported by IASPIS, Swedish Institute, Helge Ax:son Johnsons Foundation, Vision Forum & Stiftelsen Längmanska kulturfonden

Call for proposals for the International Fellowship Programme Studio14.

The art centre HALLE 14 in the Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei launches this new fellowship program in 2011 with the theme “What Happened to God?”

This year, Studio14 will award two artists who would like to work with this theme a three-month residency in Leipzig, including a monthly stipend, studio space and accommodations. But how do we label ourselves? The aim of social labels are exclude, to show how we differ from others.

Social labels are everywhere. You meet them no matter where you move through the cities of the world. They have become so fixed in everyday reality and our language that we use them without thinking about it. But what does it mean to be different? What does it mean to be a part of a group? How do we express our fears in what we are and how can we create a sense of belonging?

Spanish artist, Zoila Méndez Martín has photographed a large number of young people in Östergötland. The group of people presented, share a common link. They want to show two or more sides to their humanness and yet they are faces of a unique person. Each image pretends to discover the singular feature of the person and yet it is contradicted by a mirrored sibling. The visitor is viewing every portrait and can indentify something that is not associated with the expected expression. It offers another posed personality.

To underline this duality, the artist sometimes presents the images in black and white and sometime in colour. The photographs show something from the other “I” that the labels do not contain and do not let us to see.

The work which has been realized through Facebook networks reveals how deep technology runs in informing us about who we are and how we want to impress our being on the surrounding world. In Zoila Méndez Martín’s photographs, the act of producing the self becomes itself a form of labour that is moving to the forefront of what is considered work today.

All of the photos are untitled. The purpose is to avoid any kind of label and to make the spectator think about the humanity of this persons without any text reference of them.

Zoila Méndez Martín (1988) lives in Madrid, Spain. She is completing her degree in Fine Arts at the Complutense University of Madrid through an Erasmus scholarship in Sweden and in collaboration with Vision Forum. Her background is in painting, printmaking, drawing, video and design. But for her exchange year she has chosen to focus on photography to express her fascination for how young people in Östergötland relate to their identity.

OUUNPO - Belgrade

URGENCY Vs LEISURE

March 24th-27th, 2011

"That is all very senseless, but this senselessness has a pretty mouth, and it smiles"

"With all my ideas and follies I could one day found a corporate company
for the propagation of beautiful but unreliable imagining"

"Exceptional estimable, good, nice, dear people they all were but they all, unluckily,
kept asking me about the new novel, and that was excruciating"

Robert Walser

Are you fed up with your job and you feel you deserve a vacation? Do you suspect that in moments of relaxed leisure/pleasure you are more creative and your brain performs better than when you strain it for your work? If your answer is positive, join us in Belgrade, where we will gather our neurons for an intellectual party in the true fashion of every Ouunpo meeting!
Our gathering will take place this time in Belgrade, capital of the former Yugoslavia, a fun city not far from the leisurely coast of the Adriatic sea. The topic ”Urgency Vs Leisure” will of course resonate in relation to the local context, the geo-political history of the Balcans and to the actual revolutions and emerging crises of democracy in Europe and in the word.
But our gathering will be also an occasion to reflect on the nature of our nomadic artistic community. Perhaps the trajectory of Ouunpo has reached a point where we together need to stop and reflect on its democratic/anarchic nature in order to develop our shared future directions without necessarily fixating them. What did we achieve during our past meetings and which path we are now pursuing? What can still be shared between us and in which form?
Can we still find, in the rush of cultural production, the space/time to think freely, to make complex work of art, to engage in human relationships and to deeply commit to a personal or common project?

The activities of Ouunpo have often focused on performance; in Amsterdam and Nijmegen, this has come to the forefront, this is why we will also theoretically reflect on performing art, both intended as a liberating and revolutionary experience and as a form of immaterial labor that reveals itself to be particularly productive in the context of neo-liberalism.
Theses and other subjects will be developed in dialogue with the curatorial collective TkH (Walking theory) who will present their theoretical magazine on performance and their projet ”Deschooling classroom” inspired by the critical ideas on education of Ivan Illich, and during meetings with various Belgrade-based curators and artists. We will work and reflect about the upcoming Ouunpo Report and we will also enjoy performances and happenings taking place in museums and other public and private spaces in town.
Please follow the developments here. We look very much forward to seeing you very soon!

Program
March 24:
Day of arrival. It brings together leading specialists from the two disciplines from Europe, Asia, Australia and USA to dialogue about life and the boundaries of reality. (In)Visible Dialogues was initiated by artist Per Hüttner and Elias Arnér, professor in biochemistry at Karolinska Institutet in close collaboration with graphic designersÅ…bäke in London and a group of international sound artists. The project is a continuation of Begrepp - en Samling (Concepts a Collection) that was realized by the two former in 1992 at the same location.

When you enter (In)Visible Dialogues you will see 120 fluorescent chairs facing a blank wall. On the back of each chair a copy of the project's 240 page catalogue has been nailed and signed by an central person in Stockholm's scientific community. The chair is a version of Jonas Bohlin's design classic Concrete which has been customized by Å…bäke. The side rooms remain empty apart from a solitary lectern painted in the same colour as the chairs and which is connected to speakers that emit strange sounds.

Participating sound artists: Andy Cox and Richard Allalouf, Natalia Kamia, Samon Takahashi, Ebbot Lundberg and Yan June

(In)Visible Dialogues is supported by: Karolinska Institutet; Linköpings Universitet; Vision Forum; Ragnar Söderbergs Stiftelse; Sven och Dagmar Saléns Stiftelse; Akademien för de Fria Konsterna, Göran Lagervalls stiftelse and Statens kulturråd.

Line by Line - in Stockholm

Line by Line

Opening reception: Thursday, March 17, 18.00 ‒21.00

March 17‒31, 2011

Lumaparksvägen 7, Hammarby Sjöstad

Line is more than just a mark on paper—it is an exhibition.

There is only one direction to travel this spring—Hammarby Sjöstad! Twelve exceptional artists and designers working in different parts of Sweden will present their creations in a unique atmosphere unlike anything seen before. Participants include; Petra Lilja and Jenny Nordberg (of Apokalyps Labotek); Matilda Nordgård and Partrik Nilsson (of Argue Design); Beatrice Hansson, Eva Marklund, Helene Hortlund, Kristina Matousch, Mako Ishizuka, Maria Zetterstrand, Markus Degerman and Vivian Chan.

These individuals are diverse in practice, but have been united under the most fundamental element of design—line—which forms a visual language of expression used by artists, designers and craftsmen alike. Together, the essence of their works reveals how line is continuously present in our everyday lives through some form or another; from the first scribbles of a child to the organization of society through time, transportation and even virtual communication.
Calling to mind sketches on a piece of paper, Helene Hortlund’s works Unknown Territory (2008) and Rumsteckningar (2001) outline three-dimensional sculptures which elegantly stretch from floor to ceiling. The award-winning design group Apokalyps Labotek directs the eyes downward to Parquet (2009), a geometrical floor pattern specially made from old tires. Set against the magnificent view overlooking Hammarby Sjö, the drawings of Mako Ishizuka capture the constructed, man-made lines of different cities as demonstrated by Bird’s View of the World, in Paris (2008-10). During the opening, a special performance titled Lök, will be presented by the artist duo Made in Sweden. Lök merges the borders of art, craft and theater to question how two individuals with completely different backgrounds can face the exact same problem when trying to assimilate into one culture. The following week on Thursday, March 24, featured speaker Markus Degerman will present an overview of his company UglyCute which brings together various aspects of art, architecture and design.

Curators Anne Klontz and Nicolas de Tassigny are excited to collaborate with the artists in the space of the exhibition, which is a 1200 m2 raw factory; incredibly rare to find within the frameworks of the Stockholm art world. The space has been a true source of inspiration for everyone involved in the event’s creation and now Stockholmers are encouraged to walk the line and take part in the atmosphere of its creativity.

Line by Line is curated by Anne Klontz (anneklontz(at)gmail.com) and Nicolas de Tassigny (nicolasdetassigny(at)hotmail.com).

The performance Lök will be featured during the opening event on Thursday, March 17 from 19.30.

The presentation by Markus Degerman is Thursday, March 24 and will begin 18.30.
Doors open at 18.00.

The event is sponsored by Fabege, Vision Forum, Absolut Vodaka Sweden, Dynaprint AB.

The Invisible Generation publication release in Stockholm, March 8

Vision Forum proudly presents its first major publication the Invisible Generation and invites you to a discussion on performance art in the public space.

Gerrie van Noord (editor, London), Marie Proyart (designer, Paris), Per Hüttner (artist, Paris), Olav Westphalen (artist, Stockholm) Alessandra Sandrolini (curator, Paris and Bologna), Natasha Rosling (artist, London) Klas Eriksson (artist, Stockholm) and Stephen Whitmarsh (researcher, Nijmegen) moderated by Hanna Hannerz (producer, Norrköping).

Program
18.30 Round table discussion on performance in public spaces and the art publication as mediator of artistic content, moderated by Hanna Hannerz.
20.00 Klas Eriksson performance “No one likes us - we don’t care”

The Invisible Generation was a project that focused on non-announced performances taking place in the public and it involved over 30 artists from a dozen countries. To pursue this liberation, he looks for ways to renegotiate the relationships between the individual and the collective, in the social, political and spiritual spheres, and to push further the boundaries of human experience and knowledge.

For this sculptural installation, the artist creates a liquid space where moving images and a select number of objects become a part of a complex system of interconnected ideas.

Four videos form the hub of the exhibition and show mysterious rituals enacted by various characters. The films reveal an intimate and sensual love for the secret knowledge hidden in nature and culture. The characters are engaged in the poetic act of eating books or fruits of peculiar flowers. Even though they are acted by different actors, it seems that we pry into the life of the same human subject. The images show mundane situations that have been shifted ever so slight to reveal the vastness of the unknown in our everyday experience. Simply and wisely, the artist invites the viewer to break the subtle frame of reality and limited illusion and to embrace the unknown.

http://dca.zendaiart.com/en-US/News/NewsDetail.aspx?r=32

CREATIVE WORKERS OR DEPOLITICISED ARTISTS?

Wednesday 8th of December at 6 pm
How can we think of artistic labour in a time when an essential part of the labour market is defined as creative and artistic? In collaboration with Hüttner, musician and DJ, Jean-Louis Huhta will perform using a unique musical score created by Charlie White, an artist who in the late 80s developed a series of performances he called “Interviews” based on conversations with QP founder Johnny Ross. White believed that over time, Ross lost sight of the true meaning behind QP and therefore wanted to re-establish his voice as the strength of the movement. White added a soundtrack to the interviews which were then re-interpreted by a DJ as White performed wearing an LAPD uniform and using materials like glass sheets, halogen lamps and vinyl texts.

A reflection on the event can be found here.

Natalia Kamia @ Mors Mössa Gothenburg

Natalia Kamia presents her trans-disciplinary work at Gothenburg's cult gallery Mors Mössa. To study creative ideas, and how and where they arise in the brain, is to approach a defining element of what makes us human. […] There are several reasons why neuroscientists did not tackle creativity with the same kind of resolve as they did, say, with attention, memory, or intelligence. The most important of these is surely the problem of finding a way to study the creative process, especially its neural basis, in the laboratory […] The most important of these is surely the problem of finding a way to study the creative process, especially its neural basis, in the laboratory— under tightly controlled conditions. Clearly, one cannot simply take a volunteer, shove him/her into the nearest brain scanner, and tell him/her: Now, please be creative! The same, one might think, holds for insights. An insight is so capricious, such a slippery thing to catch in flagrante, that it appears almost deliberately designed to defy empirical inquiry.

A Review of EEG, ERP, and Neuroimaging Studies of

Creativity and Insight, Arne Dietrich and Riam Kanso, American University of Beirut

Natasha Rosling ‘Foreign Bodies’

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7ygVaaaVjEs/TIjoSxzY5JI/AAAAAAAAAWA/saf9uQHgGwA/s320/Rosling2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514913153019339922" />

September 9 - October 17, 2010
Private View: Wednesday 8 September, 6-9 PM

Hidde van Seggelen Gallery presents an exhibition by Natasha Rosling (London, 1985). It was founded in 1960 by Raymond Queneau and François Le Lionnais, while other notable members include novelists Georges Perec, Italo Calvino and Hervé Le Tellier, poet Oskar Pastior and poet/mathematician Jacques Roubaud. The group defines the term 'littérature potentielle' as: "the seeking of new structures and patterns which may be used by writers in any way they enjoy."
Constraints are used as a means of triggering ideas and inspiration. As well as established techniques, such as lipograms and palindromes, the group devises new techniques, often based on mathematical problems such as the Knight's Tour of the chess-board and permutations. Oounpo works in the same way, though its primary concern is visual art.

For more info about the project:

http://visionforumouunpo.blogspot.com/

http://visionforum-rome.blogspot.com/

Project 2: Speech and What Archive

Speech and What Archive is also a continuation of a Vision Forum project from 2009-10 lead by the artist duo A Constructed World. This year it will function as a moving conversation between participants in different places seeking new ways to represent fragmentation. Rather than identifying with the unified, constituted subject this course seeks to find shared relations through construction and fragmentation. ACW now have productive group of students and researchers and it would be very purposeful to continue with them.
Conversations — in small groups, altogether in workshop meetings, one-on-one, by Skype, by phone, in person — are the media used by participants to make an account of, and represent, ways we may be linked together in a fragmented world. The course will bring together students and collaborators from places including Paris, Angers, Sweden, Barcelona, Jakarta, Melbourne, San Francisco and New York.
Students will decide appropriate ways to represent their participation making art works using video, text, image, performance or any other appropriate media. Outcomes can include events, exhibition, publications and opportunities for collaboration with students from other schools that ACW are attached to as professors and associates. (ACW are currently working with students from Ecole nationale supérieure d’art Nice and are professors at Ecole supérieure des beaux-arts d’Angers.)

For more info about the project:

http://speecharchive.blogspot.com/

http://visionforumparis.blogspot.com/

Project 3: The New Cities Project

In the past year, as a Vision Forum node, myself and my team members initiated a temporary project in the 'new town' of Shenzhen, South China. Inheritance - Shenzhen, is a project space that acts as an experimental hub with the aim of investigating and dealing with the art history of such a young city, to promote and commission new work and to provide a local space for art happenings. We worked in partnership with the British Council, Asia Art Archive, Arthub Asia, PRSFoundation and the Contemporary Art Terminal/He Xiangning Museum and the Shenzhen/Hong Kong Biennial.

The project in Shenzhen is merely the first in a long-term project that I hope to initiate that networks 'New Towns' around the world (both in real life and online) We have identified:
Shenzhen (CN)
Chandigarh (India - an entire city designed by Le Corbusier),
Brasilia (BR)
Milton Keynes (UK)

The New Cities project is entirely experimental - determined by its indeterminacy. There are some places, there are some artists and there are some preconceptions. There surely must be some commonalities? There is certainly a sense of strangeness in each of these places that necessarily comes without an indigenous population. The officials and planners of these cities are forever attempting to make up for something that is missing - but they will never be able to since what is missing is a past. They are attempting some sort of time travel. Which in a sense, is what I hope the project will be. A journey through time and space, with the medium of art as some sort of vessel or even a channel/pathway. There is also a sense of freedom that comes with a city that has no recognisable geographically fixed tradition or peoples and within this I would like to develop the most experimental in-between (infrathin!) context for communication and art making.

For more info:

http://inheritanceprojects.org/

http://visionforummiltonkeynes.blogspot.com/

Project 4: What Cannot be Said

Collaboration between Fei Art Center and Vision Forum

What Cannot Be Said brings together 4 young artists and curators to create a series of interviews that discuss the limits of what can be expressed – in words, in art or in science. It develops themes that are at the core of Vision Forum’s activities such as:

What are the boundaries of human knowledge? What role should art play? How can art be more visionary and give more to its audience? The project also addresses issues as, how do you deal with experiences and phenomena that cannot be expressed or explained.

What Cannot Be Said addresses questions related to censorship, what is the difference between an inner censorship and an exteriorly imposed silence? How can knowledge be safeguarded and passed on without becoming instruments of oppression?

What Cannot Be Said is firmly grounded in the culture of visual art and also approach the boundaries of what art can address, express and how it functions differently from other genres and sciences.

In keeping with the Vision Forum spirit the participants are invited to question academic forms of writing and also invite non-art professionals to be interviewed to ensure an interdisciplinary approach and to safeguard that the dialogue does not become to introverted, but deals with real issues in life.

Wang Dan
Angelo Romano
Liu Xinyi
Susanne Ewerlöf

The project will be published on the Vision Forum and FCAC websites in parallel in English and Chinese.

For more info about the project:

http://visionforumshanghai.blogspot.com/

http://www.feiartcenter.com/en/archive.asp/

Project 5: Vision Forum – London

The set of activities:
- Meeting at a pub for a table soccer tournament, Shoreditch, East London.
- Visiting Houses of people who have produced meta-statements in the course of their lives. i.e. Freud, John Soane, John Latham, Swedenborg, John Hunter, T.S.Eliott...
- Visiting Julian Barbour in his residency at Oxfordshire and have an afternoon of talking on the condition of time as a construct.
- Going for a 10 day meditation retreat to North England

The structure:
The group will be visiting 9 selected houses in the course of 3 months. During the visits, the housekeepers, directors, curators will be asked to introduce us the imagined territories those people have mapped. Let this be the introduction to Freudian acknowledgement of subconscious or the flat time theory of John Latham...
These introductions will be followed by the inner group dialogue while residing in the premises for the course of three hours.
After the visits, the group will travel together to northern England to attend a 10-day meditation. Hence the space of encounter will shift from social to the personal.

For more info about the project:

http://visionforum-londonhouses.blogspot.com/

Project 6: L'entremet de Panama

2011, Panama City.

Jochen Dehn, Mark Geffriaud, Ulrich Gall, Per Hüttner, Ben Kinmont, Géraldine Longueville, Charles Mazé, Raimundas Malasauskas, Jon Phillips, Pratchaya Phinthong, Natasha Rosling, Coline Sunier, Fabien Vallos, Olav Westphalen.

Receptary : writing of cookery
The writing of a recipe probably comes from a culinary experience whose result seemed satisfying enough to keep and compile its elaboration. It recounts the different steps of the making of a dish to guaranty the success of its repetition : anticipation of the ingredients to purchase, direct use of the materials, planning of the result. A recipe is like a game book describing how a practical experience is carried out by suggesting a few narrative ingredients. Its writing was developed by medieval chefs (middle of the 14th century). The main purpose of these treatise was to point out the culinary talents of these masters, bringing their renown to the kings that would then hire their service1. But right before that in fact, the first recipe books, called receptaries, were written by several hands, margins commonly used to complete or precise one step or to add an ingredient. One of the first known receptary, the Viandier de Guillaume Tirel dit Taillevent, is more of a collective compilation of recipes (written between 1373 and 1381) than the work of a single author. The notion of authorship not being primordial at that time, a text would frequently bear the marks of several contributions. In the different manuscripted and printed versions of the Viandier, entire chapters are erased, added and modified. Besides recipes, receptaries would also compile medical cures, descriptions of historical feasts and preparations of entremets. A recipe is a narrative and practical genre in itself, a mix of culinary ingredients, allegorical representations and political propaganda. L'entremet The entremet is an entertainment combining luxury dishes, disguised food and plays, animated or not, served and performed between the courses of fastuous banquet. The interlude brook the highly codified ceremonial of the banquet composed as a representation of power. Without having to leave, the guests would thus take a break and give free will to their comments and activities. The entremet attests to the taste for ornamentation and architecture, notably expressed by the erection of monumental patés and by the arrangement of feathers on the roasted game. The entremet evolved towards artistic representation as described in the last chapter of the Viandier. The entremet of painted and carved images was not so much about edible food than representation of allegorical scenes through paintings, sculptures and live performances, all of which first took place on the table before being progressively removed on specifically designed stages. There were real shows with scenarios, actors and dramatic action. Added to the luxurious ornamentation of the table set, the entremet was a pretext for a monumental, allegorical and fantasmagorical imagery.

An example of an entremet, writing by the chief Chiquart in his book Du fait de cuisine in 1420. He describes a famous banquet organized by Amédée VIII. The text is written in an old french. It describes enormous meals made for example with head wild boar or pork, roasted, painted in green, gold and yellow glaze, spitting out fire. Some towers carried by children angel dressed, where rose water and wine flow across machicolation. Fruits, birds, roasted chicken, big fish cooked into three ways : the head is boiled, the queue is roasted, the middle is fried, and for each part a new sauce : green, orange etc...

For more info about the project:

http://visionforumpanama.blogspot.com/

Project 7: SPACING ONE’S THOUGHTS (provisional title)

Galerie Akinci, Amsterdam – 12-23 November 2010 (tbc)

Spacing one’s thoughts is a series of events organised as part of a collaboration between Yael Davids and Vanessa Desclaux. The point of departure for this project is common interest in questions of the articulation of language, speech and voice in the production of subjectivity and political agency.

The project is grounded in two projects: Learning to Imitate, an ongoing performance project by Yael Davids, and A Stuttering Exhibition, an exhibition in the form of a lecture by Vanessa Desclaux. This new series of events will take place over a period of 10 days at Galerie Akinci and will present these two projects alongside others by artists, writers, theorists and curators invited by Davids and Desclaux. Guest participants will be asked to reconfigure the space of the gallery for the specific purpose of their presentations.

For more info about the project:

http://visionforumamsterdam.blogspot.com/

Project 8: POOL PARTY KABUL

We are intrigued with the Olympic swimming pool on top of Tapa Bibi Mahroo in Kabul. The amenity was built by the occupying Soviet forces in the 1980s, who were probably posted on the hill to watch out for Afghan mujahedin. It has never been officially used as a pool, because there was no way that even the Soviets could get water to travel uphill at such a steep angle. In the mid- 1990s the Taliban pushed blindfolded criminal offenders from the highest springboard to test whether they would survive, if not they were sometimes still not freed but shot. Today kids play in the cement construction, men bet on their fighting hens or dogs in it, and every now and then after heavy rain fall one can cool off in it. This site of shabby majesty has never seen much water or collective happiness. We would like to change that by organizing an international pool party. The project aims at putting a group of local and foreign artists, Kabul children, students and other representatives from the city together to clean and paint the pool and find a way to fill it with water.

Vision Forum and KSM workshop september 2-3

Vision Forum and KSM are co-organizing a 2 day seminar september 2 and 3.

A dozen interesting artists and curators (from all over europe, australia and the us) who have realized projects for Vision Forum in 2009-10 will present this work, their respective practice and their outlook on life and art.
